In World War II, Bradley commanded troops in North Africa and led the invasion of Sicily (1943). He also led the lst Army in the Normandy invasion (1944). He served as Army Chief of Staff (1948-49), and was the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (1949-53). He retired in 1953.
